MeckEd Weekly Education e-Newsletter

Our second annual MeckEd Teachers of Excellence event last Wednesday was a great success! MeckEd was honored to recognize 25 exceptional Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools educators in front of a large audience of district leaders, community members, and business leaders. If you attended last Wednesday’s event, we hope you left feeling inspired and rejuvenated, and we hope you now have a desire to become more engaged with our local public schools. Once again, congratulations to the 2013 MeckEd Teachers of Excellence! We look forward to next year’s event. Please stay tuned for photos, videos, and testimonials from the event.

Now that we have celebrated and recognized the second class of MeckEd Teachers of Excellence, it is time to get back to the business of informing and engaging our readers about the many critical education bills currently being debated in Raleigh by the General Assembly.  There are several bills pending that MeckEd feels could dramatically affect public education. As the General Assembly faces the ever-important crossover date on Thursday, May 16th, it is important for you to contact your Mecklenburg County legislators, and make them aware of how you feel students and families will be affected. Read talking points here. Find contact information for Mecklenburg delegations here.

MeckEd Weekly Education e-Newsletter

Dear Friend of MeckEd,

Our elected officials in both the House and Senate are actively promoting numerous PreK-12 education bills, and the Governor has recently introduced his budget proposal for consideration—which includes increases in funding for PreK. Last week, I urged you to pay attention to the numerous education-related bills. This week, I want to bring three particular bills to your attention:

  • Senate Bill 236: Learn more
  • Senate Bill 361: This bill proposes a new system of grading schools based on a performance composite grounded on proficiency, as well as a Pay for Excellence Merit Pay Plan that will be implemented once a robust evaluation instrument is wholly implemented in North Carolina. Learn more
  • Senate Bill 337: This bill, if passed, will reduce accountability requirements for charter schools, including reducing requirements for hiring certified teachers, at charter schools only, and making it more difficult to close failing charter schools. Learn more
