What We Do

Inform. Educate. Engage

The goal of MeckEd’s programs and strategic initiatives is to make public education a top priority within our community. MeckEd recognizes community engagement is essential to a public education system that graduates academically successful students who are college-and career-ready. We serve as a connector to unite civic and community organizations, community leaders, local businesses and funders around a shared vision for our public schools.

Programs and Strategic Initiatives

CMS Budget Information Initiative

As part of our role of informing and educating the community about the issues facing local public education, MeckEd educates the community on the CMS budget process each year through presentations, explanatory materials and our website. We also advocate for adequate funding for CMS schools so all children can achieve significant academic success.

CMS School Board Election Information Initiative

MeckEd profiles the candidates running for the school board and shares that information, as well as relevant news, with the community so that they can be informed voters. In 2011, we held the MeckEd/WFAE Interactive Debate with School Board Candidates to give the community an opportunity to engage with the candidates, ask their questions and learn more about the candidates’ platforms and education views. The debate was also live streamed and discussed via social media.

MeckEd Teachers of Excellence

MeckEd held a reception to recognize 40 CMS teachers who are making positive strides in the classroom as part of the first annual MeckEd Teachers of Excellence. The teachers, who were nominated by their principals, were honored by the community for mastering instructional best practices and being leaders in their school communities.

Stay tuned for more upcoming programs in 2012!

Interactive Data Maps of CMS

In partnership with the UNCC Urban Institute, we have compiled graduation rates, student proficiency, per pupil expenditures, teacher turnover rates, attendance rates and student-teacher ratios for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. The interactive maps allow you to view 2009-10 and 2010-11 data for individual schools within CMS.
